Easter break in Latvia

15.03.2010

Easter is the spring solstice, when we hail the coming of the Sun. Various rituals help the earth reawake and bring fertility. Of course, the Easter egg to this day is the most significant element, especially coloring. For Latvians, rituals and games fill the jubilation, eggs are exchanged as gifts, and "duels" are held – may the strongest egg, i.e. egg shell, win as they are cracked in one-on-one combat. Eggs are "sacrificed" to the Gods to protect homesteads from sorcerers, and used in incantations to ward off evil.

Hanging a large swing on a tree branch, and swinging itself, is one of the most characteristic Easter rituals. Considered magical, it symbolizes the Sun dancing, and in turn helps the Sun "get in full swing", giving it a push as it ascends its heavenly mount. Understandably, the swing was/is hung on the highest hill. The males of the homestead performed this task, receiving in turn from the womenfolk, eggs, mittens, beer or some other token of gratitude. Swinging continued three days, and sometimes even one week. Then – the finale, as the swing cannot be left in the tree, as this brings bad luck. It is taken down and burned in a bonfire. The Easter feast is much more modest than at Christmas as, naturally, winter food reserves have come to an end. Boiled eggs, of course, cereals, milk, grey peas, flat pies and scones are on the table.

The first week in April – Easter break – is an ideal time to spend in Latvia.

March 27 to April 4, it’s the 9th international children’s film festival "Berimora kino". In the Ethnographic Open-air Museum, stroll Easter from homestead to homestead with dances and games, and rides on one or all ten swings – large and small. Also, make candles, color eggs or visit the rabbits on display. Easter will be greeted in Jurmala April 4 with various performances and a food/arts and crafts fair in Jurmala’s Open-air Museum, and attractions in Bulduri, Horn Garden and Kauguri.

Boating and canoeing in spring’s swift streams is a brisk, invigorating experience. Daily troubles are forgotten, stress is relieved, a dose of positive energy received. All this in picturesque surroundings.

For less-active activity – attend Latvia’s traditional "Bird Days" in the month of April. Nature lovers and birdwatchers can venture into the forest or elsewhere, guided by an expert ornithologist. Build birdcages and visit the exhibit “Birds in Spring”. The best time for observation – April and early May.
