Tourism in 2009 a year of spectacular events against a background of general economic downturn.

Summer cultural events, growing interest in neighbouring countries, growing number of cruise passengers and increased competitiveness of Tallinn's accommodation establishments all had a positive impact.

Economic downturn led to significantly fewer domestic tourists, fewer flight connections and shorter trips.

In total 1,14 million tourists visited Tallinn in 2009. 999 500 foreign tourist stayed overnight in Tallinn's accommodation establishments (-2% or 23 000 tourist less than in 2008), as well as 136 000 Estonian citizens (-18% or 30 100 domestic tourists). Overnight stays at accommodation establishments in Tallinn also decreased. Altogether tourists stayed in Tallinn's accommodation establishments for a total of 1,93 million nights last year. While foreign tourists totalled 1,72 million nights (making -5% or 96 100 less bed nights than last year). Estonian citizens stayed for a total of 213 500 nights (-25% or -71 300 less nights).

Tallinn's priority markets (Finland, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, Norway, Russia and Latvia) accounted for 81% of the total number of foreign visitors during 2009. Finland retains its hold on the largest sector of the market (53%) and market share grew four percentage points. Tallinn accommodated 534 600 Finns, which marked a rise of 25 600 tourists from the year before (+5%). Also the number of foreign tourists from Russia (+13%) increased. Tallinn received fewer tourists from Latvia (-3%), Norway (-7%) and Sweden (-11%). Compared to the last year the most significant decrease were in tourists from Germany (-17%) and Great Britain (-30%).

The summer months, July and August, remain Tallinn's tourism high season. The majority of foreign (142 100) and domestic tourists (13 500) arrived in July when Tallinn had the Song and Dance Celebration.

The average length of stay for tourists was 1,70 nights (-4%). Compared with 2008 the figure declined among both foreig and domestic visitors. 74% of accommodated tourists arrived for holidays, 25% were on a business trip (5% consisted of conference attendance) and the rest (1%) had some other reason for visiting Tallinn.

At the end of 2009, 342 accommodation establishments offered accommodation services: 7 540 rooms and 15 250 beds were available for guests. The revenue of Tallinn's accommodation establishments from sales of accommodation services amounted to 1,02 billion kroons (-20%). Average room occupancy rate was 44% and the average cost of a guest per night in an accommodation establishments was 529 kroons.

Tallinn Airport received a total of 1 346 000 passengers, a year-on-year decrease of 26%. The number of passengers passing through Tallinn Old Harbour totalled 7,24 million, this figure remained unchanged from the previous year (0%). The greatest share of the passengers in Tallinn Old City Harbour were passengers on the Tallinn-Helsinki line (83%), Swedish line had 11% and cruise 6% passengers. 305 cruise ships and 415 000 cruise passengers (+11%) visited Tallinn in 2009.
