Estonia’s status as a partner country announced at largest tourism fair in the Nordics

22.01.2010

MATKA 2010, the largest international travel fair in the Nordic countries, gave Estonia partner country status for 2011, which means greater promotional opportunities in Finland starting next year.

"MATKA 2011 partnership comes with extensive opportunities for media and marketing cooperation. Next year will be special for Estonia due to Tallinn being the European Capital of Culture, and partnership status will allow us to get our messages out better to Finnish consumers, who are the underpinning of our entire tourism sector. It will inspire even the most seasoned travellers to Estonia to undertake the Gulf of Finland crossing yet again," said Enterprise Estonia tourism development centre director Tarmo Mutso. "In cooperation with the Helsinki MATKA fair organizers, the Enterprise Estonia tourism development centre wants to further introduce new tourism services and opportunities to consumers and the media, highlighting exciting places to visit in Estonia. The Estonia exhibition in Helsinki in 2011 will also be more extensive."

Next-door neighbour Finland is the most important target market for the Estonian tourism sector - almost one-half of all visitors to Estonia are Finns. From January to November 2009, the number of overnight stays by Finns was up 3% in Tallinn, 2% in Pärnu -- and 82% in Lääne-Viru County. Overnight stays by Finns dropped on the island of Saaremaa (-20%). All told, total overnight stays by Finns in Estonia remained on par with 2008 (-0.5%) while overnight stays by all other nationalities decreased by a total of 7% in the period from January to November. The increase in overnight stays by Finns with commercial lodging providers in Estonia grew 2% in the same period. "In a situation where most markets are down, retaining or increasing the number of Finns, who hold the greatest market share, is of great importance to the sector and the economy. Overnight stays were down by 0.5%, but still, this is still an extremely good result in today's situation," said Mutso.
