Times selects Tallinn as one of Europe's best Christmas markets
Tallinn featured prominently in the Times overview of the best places to buy gifts and enjoy the lights at a traditional festive market.
The story on Tallinn included a photo of the Christmas market in Town Hall Square and said that the Estonian capital will host its 8th Christmas market from November 28 until January 7. The picturesque Town Hall Square is said to be the site of the world's first Christmas tree, which formed part of a ritual begun in 1441, when unmarried merchants sang and danced with the town's girls around a tree, which they then burned. Organisers expect 200,000 visitors this year and no tree burning.
The goal of the Tallinn Old Town Christmas Market is to provide genuine, unadulterated Christmas joy, fabulous culture programme and superb leisure time activities. Mayor of Tallinn will proclaim the Christmas Peace, reading the Christmas declaration from the window of the Town Hall to the townsfolk and visitors below on the Square.
The first time that the Christmas Market in the Town Hall Square in the heart of the Tallinn Old Town was held was in 2000. The estimated number of visitors of Christmas Market during the past years has been about 150,000 to 200,000 persons per year.
