Lääne-Viru County and Ida-Viru County introduced at major theme event in Helsinki

19.11.2009

From 20.11. until 22.11., yet another St. Martin's Day Fair will be held in Helsinki, this time with a focus on Lääne-Viru County and Ida-Viru County. The motto of the biggest Estonian event in Finland - "Viro alkaa Virumaasta" - reminds us that Viru County has given the Finnish name to the entire country.

Lääne-Viru and Ida-Viru counties will introduce their sights and cultural heritage in the Cable Factory cultural centre in Helsinki, with the programme entailing interviews with the governors of both counties, as well as the Narva City Orchestra and the church concert of the Viru County Young Men's Choir. The site - a huge factory building - can accommodate 150 exhibit items and sellers, over 200 on-stage performances, and over 14,000 visitors from Helsinki and its immediate vicinity.

The sales counters of the Cable Factory will be filled with delicacies, handicraft and art from all over Estonia, with an Estonian-theme tourist area opened for visitors, introducing the products and services of over 30 Estonian companies and organisations. The versatile fair programme will also feature dialogues with top Estonian politicians. Chairman of the Riigikogu Ene Ergma will meet her Finnish colleague Sauli Niinistö, whose name has often been mentioned with respect to the future president of Finland. The politicians will also discuss the Baltic Sea and economic issues which concern both nations. The Estonian Minister of the Interior Marko Pomerants will also be interviewed.

The St. Martin's Day Fair will also feature the Enterprise Estonia entrepreneurship seminar "Verkotu Viroon - menesty Virumaalla". In addition, the Estonian Tourist Board will organise a tourism seminar "Viron vinkkejä vuoteen 2010", with over 50 Helsinki tour operators and journalists participating.

The central figure of the cultural programme is the master of animations Priit Pärn, whose films will be shown at the fair on both days. In addition, Pärn will give the audience an overview of his work and will talk about his newest piece "Life without Gabriella Ferri". The music of Viru-born Arvo Pärt will be provided by the Narva City Orchestra in the Temppeliaukio Church on the eve of the fair, with the Finnish expert Heikki Valsta giving a presentation of Pärt's life and compositions.

In addition to Arvo Pärt's compositions, the cultural programme will offer both classic music and easy listening by various groups, featuring Gerli Padar, the young Estonian jazz star Kadri Voorand, the Rakvere saxophone quartet, students and supervisors of the Viljandi Culture Academy, and the Narva folklore ensemble Suprjadki. The fair will also feature Estonian poetry by Eeva Park, Hasso Krull, fs and Igor Kotjuh, with Finnish translation provided on site. New Estonian travel guides will be introduced. Graphic art and even sculptures will be available for purchase.

Children can enjoy a puppet show, workshops will be open, and a drawing competition held for friend schools on the Finnish and Estonian presidents.

The St. Martin's Day Fair is a traditional major event held on the initiative of the Tuglas Association on the penultimate weekend of November. This year's fair will be organised in co-operation with Ida-Viru and Lääne-Viru Counties as well as the Estonian Tourist Board whose tourist area is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund within the framework of the Marketing Destination Estonia Programme.

Simultaneously with the St. Martin's Day Fair, the "Vironautti, Virosta nauttii" campaign will be held for the Finnish final consumers, featuring an astronaut-like adventurous Vironaut, who yearns to find something new and fascinating in Estonia, and will share the experience upon his return.
